Last among the peaks as we complete our circle towards the east, but perhaps first among equals, is Karag Lhune, the Crescent Mountain, for as the sun rises and then sets, so too does the moon rise before it must give way to the next day. Northernmost amongst the peaks is Karagril, or the Silverhorn, who seems to stand alone in the north as its peak pierces the clouds and causes them to weep. Turning north and starting the journey back eastwards we reach Karag Zilfin, the Windswept Mountain, who towers above the western approaches of Death Pass below and watches as the dusty western gales from the Badlands struggle for primacy over the acrid eastern gales of the Dark Lands. Reaching the western end of the ring of peaks we arrive at Karag Yar, the Sunset Mountain, who in daily ritual watches as the sun dips below the horizon much like the dwarfs who delve into the earth. Continuing clockwise is Karag Rhyn, Mount Redstone, who no doubt is red from blushing given what wealth it hides within. Central among the southern peaks is Karag Mhonar, the Shadow Mountain, who but for a brief moment in the day casts no shadow on its siblings to either side and instead bathes the valley floor in a moment of respite from the unforgiving summer sun.

Clockwise from Karag Nar, next is Kvinn-Wyr, the White Lady, whose radiant graceful face looks to the southern sun, while her snow-capped crown faces north giving into the warm embrace of the sun and allowing her silver tresses to cascade into valley and give it life. In the east Karag Nar, the Sunrise Mountain, welcomes the daily sunrise and looks to the eastern road. Geographically, Karak Eight Peaks is not one mighty mountain, but as its name indicates a collection of eight peaks that encircle a lifegiving valley – a natural basin. Strategically, Karak Eight Peaks was situated along what is now known as Death Pass – the southernmost of five passes that allow passage between the desolate Dark Lands to the east and the verdant plains of the Old World to the west. The hold was located in a strategically important and geographically unique location. Karak Eight Peaks was the first of the holds founded by the ancestors as they journeyed north along the World’s Edge Mountains roughly in the year -2000 on the dwarf calendar, or -5000 on the Imperial calendar. It is said that Valaya was the founder of Vala-Azril-Ungol, as indicated by the first letters of her name being taken to form the khazalid word for queen.

Either way, if it is hearth or ale that the heart longs for, then the dwarfs turn to the blessings of Valaya, for it is she who taught the dwarfs how to shape the halls into homes and to tap into the gifts of nature by turning grains into ale and herbs into medicines. The humans are fond of saying that home is where the hearth is, though perhaps for a dwarf home is anywhere there is flagon of ale at hand. These lessons they learned from the Ancestor Gods. The dwarfen race that left the Southlands and migrated north was still in its intellectual infancy – a people that knew not how to mine and refine the ores of the earth, or how to turn the seeds of the earth into fine ales. The dwarfs travelled north along the World’s Edge Mountains to face what was to come, led by the Ancestor Gods – Grungni, Grimnir, and Valaya.

Though the world was still free of the dangers to come, a vision came to the dwarfs that their fate lay in the north to face the coming threat of Chaos. In a distant age that no living being remembers the world was a very different place, not yet beset upon by the foul children of chaos and destruction. This all changed in the Time of Woes, a dark time that lead to the fall of the once proud Vala-Azril-Ungol. Karak Eight Peaks was the largest of the southern holds, and its might and wealth were said to rival that of Karaz-a-Karak. Vala-Azril-Ungol, Queen of the Silver Depths, or Karak Eight Peaks as it is commonly known, was once one of the mightiest holds of Karaz Ankor, the ancient dwarfen kingdom that stretched the mountains of the Old World. ~Belegar Ironhammer, True King of Karak Eight Peaks “Hear me now dawi of Clan Angrund, I Belegar Ironhammer, descendant and true King of Vala-Azril-Ungol, swear to you that I shall retake our ancestral home or die trying! My body and mind shall know not a moment of rest so long as the grob and thaggoraki defile the halls which the most blessed Valaya shaped to be the first of the mighty homes for the dawi as they migrated north! The day draws nearer when the Ironhammer shall descend upon the foul heads of the occupiers of Karak Eight Peaks, and Clan Angrund will once again rule from the seat of its ancestral home!”
